Manatees: Florida
Manatees roam the vast section of the eastern seaboard of the United
States from upper Virginia to the tip of Florida and around to the west coast
of Florida to as far as Louisiana. They have been found in Texas (Hou-Manatee),
the Bahama Islands, and as far north as New York (Chessie),
but these visits are extremely rare.
The
Antilliean Manatee
closely resembles it's northern neighbor the Florida Manatee. Antillean's
primarily live along the coastal waters of Mexico, Central America, and the
upper northern coast of South America from Venezuela to Brazil. They can also
be found around islands of Cuba, Haiti-Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.
The
Amazonian Manatee, a neighbor of the Antillean Manatee haunts
the Amazon River basin, and tributaries of the Amazon throughout northern
Brazil.
The West African Manatee can be found along the West,
central seaboard of Africa. The range includes Senegal and southward to the Kwanza river (Rio Cuanza) in Angola. |
