Interacting with manatees in the wild: (cont.)

Look but don't touch!

This is the best policy for the manatee fan while swimming, snorkeling or diving. In fact, it's the law. Harassment, defined as any action which causes the manatee to alter its natural behavior, is a serious crime. Observe from a distance. Stay quiet. You're in for a real treat!

Manatee Tags mean "Hands Off"!

If you spot a manatee trailing what looks like a soda pop can with a straw sticking out of it, that's a radio transmitter & antenna used to "tag" a manatee to track it's movements. It's harmless, does not hinder the manatee in any way and has built in safety features to allow it to break away from the manatee should it become entangled. The tagging of manatees helps us to better understand their range and behavior. Please report spotting a tagged manatee to the Florida Marine Patrol.
Please DO NOT TOUCH OR GRAB THE TAGS.
